Life is too easy these days that we have too much time to think and worry. If you're shy, its even worse, and I was "diagnosed" with "major depression" myself, but I always knew it was just me being shy and having few friends because of it. I would over think, over worry, and all the bs ideas that I'd come up with of what people would think of me, would prevent me from doing anything. You realize how ignorant people are and that you really only can rely on yourself and not others for happiness.

Sounds like a typical explanation from psychology nowadays. I guess you paid attention in class. My problem with it though, is what solution does it offer. In the end, you couldn't do much for her. Depression is just discouragement and that is a feeling based in shame. Cutting herself in response to shame, from a Christian perspective, fits! Ultimately, we are supposed to resolve our shame by washing in the blood of Christ, but in our vanity, we turn to our own blood or the blood of others.
