Sam Boyd Sr Memorial 2010

Memorial Eulogy for Sam Boyd Sr. by Sam Boyd Jr April 29, 2007Welcome to a great celebration. My father loved big get togethers.... and this is a tremendous one. On behalf of all family members I would like to thank you for your love and support. We have received condolences from around the county and around the world. Emails from Bombay and Sydney.... cards and calls from hundreds. I want to thank everyone that traveled from near and far... Paul Gilbert from Sunbury, Pennsylvania and Coach Greg Waggner from Gunnsion, Colorado to name a few. It means a lot to us.....He was my father, but he was a father figure for hundreds... our coach, our mentor, our best friend. He was my life coach. We worked together, played together and cried together. I will miss him, but know hes watching over us until we embrace again. There is no need to tell most people here about my father as he was an open book. Anyone that talked with Coach Boyd more than 20 minutes knew everything about him including how much he paid in taxes last year and what lure to use while salmon fishing. He could recount hundreds of stories and jokes, one funnier than the next.... I have herd them all... many, many, many, times. My father had many passions.... at the top of the list, family, teaching, coaching, fishing and wrestling.Family- He put his family first... While traveling together we made many detours to visit with long lost 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cousins.... he had lots of cousins. He relished family reunions. He even went so far as to travel to Scotland with Hazel, my Uncle Bob and Aunt Joan so he could see Boyd Castle. He had a brave heart.Teaching- He loved to teach.... he loved the students. My brother Kelly and I rode to school with him everyday from age 13 to 16.... it was hard to cut class when your fathers a teacher. Morro Bay High School.... he was the embodiment of Pirate spirit for over 30 years. We would offend tell each other about our day on the way home from school. He asked me one day WHY do I get so many academically challenged students taking my classes.... (he used a different phrase) I said Dad, the rumor around school is.... your an easy grader. He wanted everyone to get an A. Coaching- Coach Boyd..... Tough, dedicated and passionate. He considered everyone he ever coached or sponsored to be part of his immediate family. Win or lose he was in your corner 100%. He quoted his coaching cliches on the field and at the dinner table.... When the going gets tough, the tough get going.... If you get hurt.... Put some mud on it.... and the classic .... winners never quit and quilters never win! He supported all student athletes... he was a Greyhound, a Mustang, an Eagle, a Mountaineer. He helped raise hundreds of thousands dollars to make sure everyone had the same opportunity he had ....to enjoy sports that build character and make life Champions.
