I'm not sure if I am being quoted correctly or not. The addict ON bupe is vastly different, in my opinion-- because the obsession to use is gone when bupe is used correctly. Some people think all addicts have 'character defects' that need counseling to go away; I believe that in many cases the character defects go away simply by removing the obsession to use. Take away the obsession, and some addicts are still jerks, just like some non-addicts are jerks. They BOTH could use 'counseling!'

I would never 'tell a person what to do'. My point was that going on a ceiling dose of bupe is a step UP in tolerance from 15 mg methadone, not DOWN-- and the dose/response curve is not 'linear', making a taper difficult. I stand by those comments-- but a person can do whatever works for him/her.

When I say 'I've been an addict for 16 years', I'm referring to time as an addict- not time using!. I would not have survived using for 16 years-- not at the pace I was going!! The period of 'active use'-- i.e. taking substances and not in recovery-- was about a year total, if you add the initial use in 1993 and my relapse in 2001. I've been working for the past 16 years-- 8 years as an anesthesiologist, the rest as a psychiatrist. I haven't 'used' since my relapse/treatment in 2001.

Hi Doc, So happy to see your on youtube! Your the best! I was wondering while you were using during those 16 years, were you treating patients?

So the counceling one gets while on suboxone is void? This is no wrong time to start counceling really imo, aside from during the acute withdrawal process. Although like Dr. J said, "..the drug addict on suboxone is the same as the drug addict off suboxone..I don't see it this way.."

hey DR i have a question. I was currently on suboxone to get off of opiates and i REALLY want to do it but cold turkey is just way too hard with school and everything. I had to stop my suboxone because i was laid off of work and its too expensive ($100 for dr visit and $200 for 20 pills) is it possible to get a script of oxycodone and taper off of that as it would be much cheaper?

@2005rosebud cool I start bupe today after years of methadone. thanks for sharing your success story with me I needed to hear it!

Oh yes counseling is so important! I was on Bup when it was research in 01-02. There was no counseling offered at all and I was too dumb to get it on my own. because of this I relapsed after being on bup for a year and a half because a relationship ended. In turn I walked off the bup and had to get on methadone. This was perhaps my biggest mistake! You cannot get clean and stay clean without counseling period. It is very important. I would be off by now and now I am still stuck. itsimportant

I wanted to disagree with your telling a methadone patient to not get on bupe at 15mgs. You felt they were almost home free. Have you ever detoxed off of methadone? It has its own withdrawl syndrome and I found bupe very helpful in quitting a 5 year use of methadone. I am now 5 years clean from all drugs. |
